Invoicing in India: what your invoice needs

A GST tax invoice in India has to carry more than a price and a total. It must show your GSTIN, the tax split (CGST and SGST inside your state, IGST between states), the place of supply and an HSN or SAC code for what you sold. Getting one of these wrong can cost your customer their input tax credit, and customers notice.

Since 22 September 2025 most goods and services sit in two GST slabs, 5% and 18%, with a 40% slab for a short list of luxury and sin goods. The 12% and 28% slabs no longer exist. Use the rate that applies to your specific item or service, and check it against the current rate schedule if you are unsure.

What a India invoice should include

  • Your name, address and GSTIN
  • A consecutive invoice number and the invoice date
  • The buyer's name, address and GSTIN (GSTIN needed for B2B; optional for small B2C sales)
  • HSN code for goods or SAC code for services (the number of digits depends on your turnover)
  • Description, quantity and unit of each item
  • Taxable value after discounts
  • Rate and amount of CGST and SGST, or of IGST
  • Place of supply (with the state name and code)
  • Whether tax is payable on reverse charge
  • Total invoice value, in figures and words, and your signature or digital signature

Practical tips

Composition dealers issue a different document

If you are registered under the composition scheme you cannot charge GST or issue a tax invoice. You issue a "bill of supply" instead. Do not use a GST invoice for those sales.

Pick IGST or CGST+SGST from the place of supply

If you and the buyer are in the same state, split the tax equally into CGST and SGST. If you are in different states, charge IGST. Mixing them up is one of the most common reasons an invoice gets rejected by a buyer's accountant.

Exporting services? Check the letter of undertaking

Exports of services can be zero-rated. Many exporters supply under a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) so they do not pay IGST upfront. Your invoice should state that the supply is under LUT.

Common questions about invoicing in India

Do I need to charge GST if I am a freelancer?

Only once your turnover crosses the registration threshold (₹20 lakh for services in most states). Some situations, such as selling through an e-commerce platform, require registration regardless of turnover. Below the threshold you can invoice without GST and say so on the invoice. Registered freelancers charge 18% on most professional services.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

CGST goes to the central government and SGST to the state government. They are charged together, each at half the rate, when you and the buyer are in the same state. IGST is charged at the full rate for supplies between states and goes to the central government.

Is a PDF from this tool enough for e-invoicing?

If your turnover is above ₹5 crore, B2B invoices must be generated through the government's e-invoice system (IRP), which adds an IRN and QR code. A PDF from a simple generator does not do that. Below the threshold, a properly filled tax invoice is what the law requires.

Can I change the GST rate on the invoice?

Yes. Set the rate that applies to your item or service in the tax rate field. The tool then calculates the tax and the total. The correct rate depends on the item, so confirm it in the official rate schedule.
