Invoicing in Austria: what your invoice needs
An Austrian Rechnung has to meet section 11 of the VAT Act, and the list is close to Germany's. The detail that changes with the size of the invoice is the customer's UID number, and above a certain total the customer must be named in full. Small invoices under €400 can be much shorter.
Since 1 January 2025 the small-business exemption has a higher limit, €55,000 of turnover a year, and it is now a gross limit. Sales up to 10% over the limit are tolerated for the rest of that year.

Practical tips
Small businesses: name the exemption
If you use the Kleinunternehmerregelung, write that on the invoice, for example "umsatzsteuerbefreit gemäß § 6 Abs. 1 Z 27 UStG", and show no VAT line.
Big invoices need the customer's UID
Above €10,000 gross the customer's UID must be shown. Ask for it at the start of a large project, not when the invoice is due.
Government customers
Invoices to federal authorities generally have to be submitted electronically. If you work for public bodies, check that authority's rules before you send a PDF.
Common questions about invoicing in Austria
What is a Kleinbetragsrechnung?
A small-amount invoice for totals up to €400 gross. It needs fewer details: it can leave out the customer's name and address and does not need a running invoice number, but it must still show your details, the date, the type and quantity of goods or services, the total and the tax rate.
Do I have to charge VAT?
Not if you qualify as a Kleinunternehmer with up to €55,000 turnover a year. You then charge no VAT and note the exemption on your invoices.
Which number do I use, Steuernummer or UID?
For business invoices you show your UID number (ATU followed by 8 digits) if you have one. The UID is also what customers in other EU countries check.
Is a PDF invoice valid?
Yes, for private and business customers, as long as it contains the required details. Federal authorities are generally an exception and expect electronic submission, so check their rules.
