Invoicing in Australia: what your invoice needs
In Australia a document only counts as a "tax invoice" if it meets the ATO's list of requirements, and your GST-registered customers need that document to claim a GST credit. The essentials are the words Tax invoice, your ABN, the date, what you sold, and the GST amount. Everything else depends on the size of the sale.
The two figures to remember are $82.50 and $1,000. You only have to issue a tax invoice on request for a sale above $82.50 including GST, and once a sale is above $1,000 the buyer's name or ABN must be on it as well.

What a Australia invoice should include
- The words Tax invoice, stated clearly
- Your business name and ABN
- The date the invoice was issued
- A brief description of each item, with quantity and price
- The GST amount, or a line such as Total price includes GST
- The extent to which each item is a taxable sale, if some items are GST-free
- For sales above $1,000: the buyer's name or ABN
Practical tips
Quote your ABN or expect withholding
If you do not give your ABN to a business that pays you more than $75 (excluding GST), they must withhold 47% of the payment and send it to the ATO, unless an exception applies. Put your ABN in the business registration field and it will be on every invoice.
Mixed GST and GST-free sales
Some supplies, such as certain food, health and education services, are GST-free. If one invoice mixes taxable and GST-free items, show which is which so the GST total is clear.
Not registered for GST?
Do not write Tax invoice and do not charge GST. Issue a normal invoice with your ABN. Charging GST while unregistered is a compliance problem, not a favour to the customer.
Common questions about invoicing in Australia
Do I have to put the words Tax invoice on it?
Yes, if you are GST-registered and the sale is taxable. The ATO lists it as a requirement. The buyer uses that document to claim their GST credit, so a plain invoice without those words can cause them trouble.
What if the sale is under $82.50?
You do not have to issue a tax invoice for a taxable sale of $82.50 or less including GST. You still need to give one if the buyer asks for a sale above that amount, within 28 days.
Can I use this tool for a GST-free invoice?
Yes. Set the tax rate to 0% and add a line in the notes explaining that the supply is GST-free. Keep the ABN on the invoice.
Is a PDF acceptable?
Yes. A tax invoice can be paper or electronic. Australia also has an e-invoicing network based on Peppol, but it is optional for most businesses.
